In the beginning....were green onions I

Everything I cook starts with onions. After being inspired by Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life (P.S.)
to become a locavore I wondered what I would do about onions. You can't grow them in the summer in Southwest Florida, and there's no root cellars to keep 'em in. [Besides, a root cellar in the summer in Florida? I shudder to think what might actually grow in there.] So I decided to try green onions.

You can grow bunches of them in a small space [almost everything I grow is in containers].

It turns out green onions are not only easy, they're everlasting...

Great Reads [some gardening related, some not]

Animal, Vegetable, Mineral is the locavore Bible and my inspiration for the current state of my yard.

I loved Prodigal Summer so much I didn't want it to end. It's about fertility on all levels; the fertile soil, the fertile heart, the fertile soul. I've made at least one piece of art about it and I expect I will make more.

I've read two great books from Jared Diamond, Collapse and Guns, Germs and Steel. Collapse is the more entertaining read, if you can call imminent resource collapse entertaining :)

As an artist I've been deeply influenced by Neil Gaiman's The Sandman comic book series. There are so many ways to describe this series, and none that I can think of do it justice, so I think I'll use a quote from Gaiman himself."Could I do another five issues of Sandman? Well, damn right. And would I be able to look at myself in the mirror happily? No. Is it time to stop because I've reached the end, yes, and I think I'd rather leave while I'm in love."

Cookbooks I like. Simple, healthy, fast. [Although in large part these days dinner is driven by what is ripe.]

And now for something less serious...Stephen and I recently plowed through Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse southern vampire mysteries. They are totally fun. Charlaine! Get to writing! We need more Sookie!

Two of my favorite series about Florida: John MacDonald's Travis McGee series and Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford series. The Deep Blue Goodbye is the first in the Travis McGee series. Sanibel Flats is the first in the Doc Ford series, but The Man Who Invented Florida might be my favorite.

More Great Reads

I picked up my first Edward Rutherfurd read in the gift shop at Sarum. It was, appropriately, entitled Sarum and tells the history of Sarum [Old Salisbury] and the region from the Stone Age on thru five families. If you like your history fed to you fictionalized, you'll love Rutherfurd.

Asia reads! If you've not read before, more fictionalized history. [I asked a Chinese friend if he thought Clavell was pretty accurate, and he said, yeah, but from a western point of view.]
